The Everest Off-the-Beaten Trail is a seven-day journey starting from Phaplu that takes you into the heart of the lower Everest region. Additionally, it is a great escape for those who do not want any hard experience like Everest Base Camp Trek. This experience combines rich history, Sherpa culture, and breathtaking Himalayan views with a luxurious twist. Designed for travellers seeking an alternative to the bustling Mt. Everest Base Camp trail, this route retraces the paths once walked by Sir Edmund Hillary.

Begin your journey by flying into Phaplu on a scenic domestic flight, driving along winding roads through picturesque hills, or opting for a private helicopter charter for a more exclusive arrival. Your stay at The Happy House—a historic lodge associated with Hillary himself—offers a unique glimpse into his legacy. From here, embark on guided hikes through traditional villages, explore serene landscapes, and visit sacred sites.

This journey also includes a stay in a luxury glamping tent, where you'll wake up to a spectacular sunrise over the Himalayan peaks. Along the way, experience cultural highlights like the Chiwong Monastery, with opportunities to immerse yourself in Sherpa traditions.

Essential Tips

This collection of essential information ensures you're fully prepared for your luxurious adventure in the Everest region:

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time for this adventure is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These months offer clear skies, moderate temperatures, and optimal trekking conditions, with stunning views of the Himalayas.

Physical Fitness Requirements

While this is a luxury trek, some physical fitness is still necessary. Expect moderate trekking on varied terrain, including ascents and descents. We recommend preparing with regular walking or hiking in the months leading up to your journey.

Even though you do not have any sort of Trekking experience at all, the journey is easily doable.

Accommodation

Throughout the trek, enjoy stays in luxurious lodges like The Happy House in Phaplu and comfortable glamping tents in Ratnange. These offer a blend of comfort and nature, with quality amenities to make your stay enjoyable. Kathmandu, however, will have the comfortable accommodation of your choice.

Flights and Travel Options

You have three travel options to reach Phaplu:

  • By Road: A scenic 8–10-hour drive through picturesque valleys and villages.

  • By Twin-Otter Flight: A regular flight from Kathmandu to Phaplu offering breathtaking aerial views. This, however, depends on the availability of the flights and the number of travellers as well. In peak seasons the flights are easily available, but are never sure in off season.

  • By Helicopter: A private helicopter ride that offers an exclusive and faster way to reach Phaplu while taking in incredible mountain vistas.

Packing Tips

Pack light but ensure you have essentials like warm clothing, good trekking shoes, a sleeping bag, and a camera to capture the beauty around you. Don’t forget good sunscreen, sunglasses, and a water bottle for hydration. As your base mostly will be in Phaplu, you have access to lots of accessories.

Although the trekking includes a night of camping, trekkers will not need to pack any sort of camping gear.

Health and Safety

  • Ensure you are well-prepared for moderate-altitude trekking. While this journey doesn’t reach extremely high altitudes, altitude sickness can still occur to some.

  • A medical kit, including basic first aid supplies and personal medication, is recommended. Although, our team will have it with them on standby.

  • Ensure you have travel insurance covering both medical and evacuation costs in case of emergencies.

Cultural Etiquette

Nepal is a culturally rich country, and respecting local customs is important. Always ask before taking photographs of locals, especially in sacred or religious sites. Dress modestly and remove shoes before entering temples or monasteries.

Guide and Porters

Your Everest Luxury Holidays guide will provide insights into the culture, history, and geography of the region. You will also have support from professional porters who will carry your luggage and assist with your needs during the trek.

Currency

The currency used in Nepal is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR). It's advisable to carry some cash in local currency, though ATMs are available in Kathmandu. Most lodges and restaurants in remote areas accept cash, but some may also accept cards.
